Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro is a city where you can find anything you want, no matter what kind of traveler you are. There’s adventure and sightseeing, there’s culture, there’s nightlife with live music and dancing, there’s food and caipirinha’s.
Adventure & Sightseeing
Let’s start exploring the city a little bit. The best way to do this is by bike, to my opinion. We did a tour with Rio by Bike http://riobybike.com/nl, who took us around the city for 3 hours. There’s multiple tours available, choose one which suits you. Rio is also a place with many view points. I’ve been to three.
1. There’s the Two Brothers mountains. You take a bus up and hike the last bit. The first few stops along the trail have view on the West side, including one of Rio’s biggest valvella’s where 70.000 people live. Only when you reach the top you can see East of Rio de Janeiro including Ipanema and Copacabana Beach. You can see Christo Redentor, the famous statue of Christ the Redeemer, gazing over Rio. The lake and Sugar Loaf. The last two mentioned are the other two places where you can go for beautiful views over Rio de Janeiro.
2. To reach Christ the Redeemer we took a taxi to the bottom of the mountain. There you can choose if you want to take the train or the bus. We took the bus as the train would leave in an hour and the bus immediately. Luckily for us, it wasn’t super busy so we reached the top pretty quickly. But I can imagine in high season, there will be a lot of people waiting in line. So make sure you keep that in mind for the rest of the day planning. From here again, you have the best view over Rio and above all, you are standing at one of the new seven world wonders. How cool is that?!
3. The third view point is Sugar Loaf. Head to the bottom again by taking a taxi, from there you can take the funicular up. Take it all the way, as there is a transfer halve way. This sightsee is actually mentioned on Tripadvisor as number 1 attraction in Rio. Definitely worth exploring! Maybe the above is too much for one day. Spread it over two days and take the afternoons off to chill at Ipanema Beach with some Coco water, watching some beach volleyball. Another sightsee place is of course the famous historic site Escadaria Selarón. It’s a set of world-famous steps in Rio, covered with colored tiles. Work of the artist Jorge Selarón himself and also famous because of Pharrell and Snoops music video. Combine the visit with the Lapa street fair on Friday night. Samba carambaaaa! Visit the Jardin Botanico, the Botanic Gardens preferably one morning. To stroll around and to enjoy the gardens. Make sure afterwards you will have lunch at Parque Lage. This mansion also was featured in Snoop Dogg’s music video ‘Beautiful’. Rumors go that he even bought the house…? Parque Lage is by the way also a starting point to hike up to Christ the Redeemer.
